Football transfer rumours: Eden Hazard to Manchester United?

Sir Alex Ferguson prepared for his side's weekend win over West Brom yesterday by travelling to France to watch Lyon beat Lille on Saturday night. The Manchester United manager is presumed to have been in the Stade Gerland to run the rule over Lille's Belgian midfielder Eden Hazard and was spotted failing to stifle a yawn by TV cameras shortly after Lisandro López put the home side 2-0 up six minutes before the interval. "Maybe he's tired," mused Hazard, who has also been linked with Chelsea, Arsenal, Real Madrid and Barcelona, but confessed to not having been aware of Ferguson's presence at the match upon being told the football luminary was in the crowd.

A pivotal weekend in the Premier League has seen the momentum shift to the red half of Manchester as Sir Alex Ferguson's side took a slender one-point gap at the top of the table.

A routine victory at Old Trafford on Sunday in what could have been a potential hazard against a West Bromwich Albion side who had been on an impressive run of late, moved United into pole position to extend their record haul of 19 top-flight titles.

A Wayne Rooney double moved the reigning champions onto 67 points with just 10 games left until the curtain falls on another season.

Meanwhile, at the Liberty Stadium, Manchester City were undone by a Swansea side who have proven to be one of the most difficult teams to beat on their own patch in their debut season in the top flight, courtesy of a late winner from striker Luke Moore.

Only Manchester United and Norwich have left Swansea with maximum points in the campaign so far, so although the outcome may not have come of as much of a surprise as it first seemed, the implications on the destination of the Premier League title could reach far beyond the result itself.

Many punters and fans will point to the potential blockbuster in store on April 30 when City will host United at Etihad Stadium but the side now second in the table have several more tests to pass if they are to remain in touching distance of their local rivals before that clash.

City host a struggling Chelsea side next and although their imperious home record should see them through that game they also have to visit a rejuvenated Arsenal, who have the deadliest striker in the country in their ranks, which is no easy feat.

United now hold the advantage after overhauling the points deficit but with 10 games still as well as potential European commitments there are bound to be yet more twists and turns. As such, the favourites tag could be passed back and forth several times more before the season concludes.
