Berbatov was left on the bench for Wednesday night's 1-1 draw with Benfica and has made just one appearance this season, coming on as a second-half substitute in United's opening Barclays Premier League match at West Bromwich Albion.
Wednesday's Champions League encounter at the Stadium of Light seemed like the perfect opportunity for Berbatov to return, especially as Anders Lindegaard, Antonio Valencia and Darren Fletcher all made their first appearances of the season.
Instead, the £30.75m Bulgarian, who shared the Golden Boot prize with Carlos Tevez last season, remained where he was as Ferguson went with Wayne Rooney as a lone striker before introducing Javier Hernandez later on.
"It is hard because of the number of strikers we have," Ferguson said. "Michael Owen is there, Federico Macheda, Mame Biram Diouf. Danny Welbeck won't be back next week but probably the week after. It is not easy.
"Dimitar has been training terrific. His attitude is spot on. He will get his game time as the season wears on. There is no question about that."
IMPRESSIVE STRIKE
After all the talk of youngsters at Old Trafford in recent weeks, United needed an intervention from old stager Ryan Giggs to grab a point.
Trailing to Oscar Cardozo's impressive strike and outplayed for long periods, United were thankful for Giggs' 27th Champions League goal, 17 years to the day since his first.
The Welshman has now scored in 16 seasons of the competition, another record.
Ferguson was also thankful for a fine display from Lindegaard, even if regular goalkeeper David de Gea is already assured of his spot for Sunday's showdown with Chelsea.
"We have two great goalkeepers," Ferguson said on Wednesday.
"We were always going to share it and David will play on Sunday against Chelsea and possibly Anders will play at Leeds next Tuesday, depending upon how we see the situation with Ben Amos, who needs some game time also.
"There are opportunities to spread the load. The English league is so frenetic. Coming into that, as a young goalkeeper, there will be times when we can give him (De Gea) a break.
"Tonight was a good moment because he had a fantastic game on Saturday."

Giggs still feels fresh
Sumber Asal
Ryan Giggs still has no plans to retire, even though the man in the opposing dug-out at Old Trafford on Sunday will be much younger than his 37 years.
The evergreen Manchester United midfielder scored a tremendous goal against Benfica on Wednesday night and will be eager to face Andre Villas-Boas' Chelsea side after playing a key role in the Blues' Champions League downfall last term.
"Yes, it's slightly strange I suppose seeing managers younger than me," he admitted to MUTV. "I mean he's obviously had a successful time at Porto and Pep Guardiola is only 40 so it might be a trend that is starting to happen."
United's infusion of young talent into the side is ensuring Giggs remains hungry and in tip-top condition as he looks to extend his record-breaking run in the club's first-team.
"I think I'm just enjoying it," he stressed. "Enjoying the challenge each season. The young players carry you through at times in training, when you're feeling a bit down or a bit slow, they are nipping at your heels and just dragging you on. They're making you feel sharp and train that much harder.
"Of course, with the manager and all of your other team-mates, you don't want to let them down. You constantly want to keep the quality you've had during your career, although my game's changed, I've still got to try and contribute to the team which, hopefully, I will carry on doing.
"I've not got any targets at all. If I pass these milestones then it's great but I've never set myself any targets. I try and enjoy it and try to win things. It's what I'm doing. Every moment, every week, every season is a bonus to me now.
"I was getting ready to finish two or three years ago but I'm still enjoying it. It's why I'm

Rooney
Rooney played a pivotal role in United's stunning 8-2 annihilation of Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The England forward curled home free-kicks either side of the interval before completing his latest hat-trick eight minutes from the end of an astonishing rout.
His first effort saw him become the latest man to score 150 times for United. By the end he had overtaken Ruud van Nistelrooy as the 10th most prolific player in Red Devils' history.
MANY MORE
Still aged just 25, Rooney now has Charlton's 249 in his sights.
"It is always a great feeling to score," he said. "Now I have over 150 goals for a club like United and hopefully there are many more to come.
"I am delighted with the way it is going. I worked hard in pre-season. I have started well and the team have started great.
"I was aware I was one off 150 before the game. I asked how many Bobby Charlton scored. Giggsy (Ryan Giggs) said I had another 100 to go. That is a target. Hopefully I will do it in the next few years."
Rooney's efforts brought an end to a quite amazing day as the city of Manchester put north London in its place and sent out a clear warning where the power of English football is now housed - not that Sir Alex Ferguson is quite ready to dismiss allcomers just yet.
"It is only three games," he said. "We have a long way to go to get through winter but we have a strong squad.
"Injuries can play a part in this league. Manchester City have a very strong, experienced squad. You can never rule out Chelsea and Liverpool are starting to come good now after spending a lot of money. But in eight months' time, you don't know."
Rooney
Rooney has been in electric form so far this term. His hat-trick at Bolton Wanderers on Saturday was his second in successive matches, taking his overall tally to eight goals in four matches - just three fewer than he managed in the Barclays Premier League throughout last season.
Although Sir Alex Ferguson intends to make some changes when United begin their latest Champions League quest against Benfica on Wednesday in order to keep his players fresh for Sunday's showdown with Chelsea at Old Trafford, it would be a surprise if Rooney was not involved in some capacity.
Carrick is certainly predicting something special from the 25-year-old, who spent virtually a year in the doldrums after injuring his ankle in a Champions League defeat by Bayern Munich in March 2010.
SINGLE MINUTE
"This is probably Wayne's best season so far and I am expecting big things from him," said Carrick.
"He has done well in the past but he is getting more mature. He is handling things well and going from strength to strength.
"Sometimes he plays well but because he hasn't scored, people don't think he has played well. They just judge him on his goals.
"To score and perform the way he has is brilliant."
Rooney's contribution has helped inspire the youngsters in United's squad, to the extent Carrick had not been called upon to contribute a single minute to United's league season until Tom Cleverley got injured at the Reebok.
Ferguson has said in the past that Carrick usually takes a couple of months to get going.
EXTENDED DEALS
It certainly seemed that way last term when the 30-year-old played just twice during the opening two months - partly due to an ankle injury - but ended up being an integral member of a team that secured a record 19th league title before starting the Champions League final.
"It is not so much a case of being worried about getting back in, more that I just want to play," said the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder.
"I have to be patient. I have not been left out in the cold in any way and I know I am going to get games.
"It is frustrating but I look at the bigger picture.
"It hasn't just been me who has had to wait. Others are facing the same situation.
"But now the Champions League has started again more players will be needed."
